‘Cultural Surprise’ project with Derbyshire Virtual School
Over the summer Adverse Camber and Derbyshire Virtual School partnered on a project with 15 young asylum seekers who’ve recently arrived in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to discuss the Cultural Surprises they'd experienced since being in the UK.
Led by storyteller Sef Townsend and creative mentor and ESOL tutor Nicci Mellor, supported by Adverse Camber engagement producer Aoife O'Connor it was a joyful 4 days in Nottingham and Buxton learning about their journeys, sharing the differences in houses, supermarkets, cars, the weather, putting together advice for anyone travelling somewhere new, using storytelling and games, drawing and writing to understand the things that make a place exciting and more importantly the values we share and bring to the communities we live in.
